Work in Progress - Die by the Drop

More than a month ago I was sitting in the car on the way back from my Seattle trip when got the sudden idea for trying a new process of doing a hand painted/drawn photo transfer manipulation on canvas. After catching up on some other work (which included photos from Seattle), I’m finally starting on making that idea a reality.

I liked Syrien Sweets’s expression and pose in this photo. I wanted to use it as the basis for a piece of art. Then, I got the idea of doing a photo transfer and actually using the photo in the piece of art.

The first steps were to make a print of the photo then prepare both the canvas and print by brushing the surfaces with some gloss polymer medium. I pressed the print into the canvas and let them sit for a while. I peeled off the paper and rubbed off and excess bits that were still stuck to the canvas. Basically what happened is the polymer medium transferred the ink from the print to the canvas. While it wasn’t perfect and it has a gritty, weathered appearance, I got most of what I wanted.

Next, I painted in the black background. (Never mind the glossy bits. The paint was still drying and light was reflecting off it in this photo). This is where I’ve left off. While I’m not sure how much of the photo may end up showing through once I start working on the figure, what I have gives me a good basis to play around with.
